There will be no New Years' revelry on the streets of Dhaka and other major towns of Bangladesh in view of the devastating cyclone last month, which left thousands dead and millions homeless, local media reported Wednesday.
The decision, by the inter-ministerial committee of the government dealing with law and order, is also prompted by security considerations. The security agencies have been asked to curb illegal alcohol trade that spurts during the run up to the New Year's eve Dec 31, the Daily Star reported.

There will also be no illumination on government offices during Eid-ul-Azha, which falls on Dec 21 and on the Christmas day, the committee has decided.
The committee asked the garment factory owners to pay the employees their salaries and bonus before Eid-ul-Azha. Garment industry is one of the largest employers in Bangladesh and also the highest foreign exchange earner.
